What is the Force Converter?

Force is what changes the motion of an object, and in the SI system it is measured in newtons (N). One newton is the force that gives a one-kilogram mass an acceleration of one metre per second squared, which comes straight from Newton's second law, F = m × a. Every other unit on this page is just a different sized package of the same physical quantity, so converting between them is a matter of scaling to and from the newton.

Some of these units come from older or non-SI systems. The dyne is the centimetre-gram-second (CGS) unit, equal to exactly 0.00001 N, and it still appears in older physics texts and in surface-tension figures. Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating kilograms as a force. A kilogram measures mass, not force. Only kilogram-force (kgf) is a force, equal to the weight of one kilogram under standard gravity. If you start from a mass in kg, multiply by gravity (about 9.80665 m/s squared) to get newtons before comparing forces.
  • Confusing pound-force with pound-mass. The "pound" is used for both mass (lbm) and force (lbf). This tool handles pound-force, the weight of one pound. Mixing the two leads to errors of a factor of about 32.174 in some engineering formulas, so confirm which pound a source means.
