๐ CST to EST Converter, Central Time to Eastern Time
By Shihab Mia ยท Updated 2026-07-28
To convert CST to EST, add 1 hour: Central Time is always exactly 1 hour behind Eastern Time, whether both zones are on standard time (CST/EST) or both are on daylight time (CDT/EDT). So 9:00 AM CST is 10:00 AM EST, and 2:00 PM CDT is 3:00 PM EDT. The gap stays fixed at 1 hour year round because Chicago and New York switch to daylight saving time on the same date and switch back on the same date, under the same US federal schedule. Enter a date and time in Central Time above and this tool converts it to the matching Eastern Time instant, correctly labeled CST or CDT and EST or EDT for that date.
What is the CST to EST Converter?
Central Time and Eastern Time are two of the four main time zones in the contiguous United States, and they sit next to each other: Central Time (used in Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Minneapolis, and New Orleans, among others) runs at UTC minus 6 hours in winter and UTC minus 5 hours in summer. Eastern Time (used in New York, Washington DC, Atlanta, Boston, and Miami) runs at UTC minus 5 hours in winter and UTC minus 4 hours in summer. Subtract one from the other at any point in the year and the answer is always 1 hour, with Eastern ahead of Central.
That consistency exists because of a specific piece of US law. The Uniform Time Act of 1966, as amended by the Energy Policy Act of 2005, sets a single national schedule for daylight saving time: clocks in every zone that observes DST move forward on the second Sunday in March and move back on the first Sunday in November. Central and Eastern Time both observe DST, and they both flip on those same two dates. Because neither zone gets a head start on the other, the relative gap between them never changes, unlike some international pairs where one country observes DST and the other does not, temporarily shrinking or widening the usual difference.
The practical effect is that a CST to EST conversion is simpler than most cross-zone conversions: you do not need to check whether a specific date falls inside a DST transition window for one zone but not the other, because both zones transition together. Adding 1 hour to a Central Time gives the correct Eastern Time on every single day of the year, including the handful of days each March and November when the clocks themselves are shifting. The only thing that changes across the year is the label: in winter the pair is CST and EST, in summer it is CDT and EDT, but the arithmetic between them is unchanged.
This converter still performs a real timezone lookup rather than hardcoding "add 1 hour", because the underlying question, "what is the current UTC offset for America/Chicago and America/New_York on this date", is exactly what a correct implementation must answer, and it also lets the tool report the right abbreviation (CST vs CDT, EST vs EDT) automatically for whichever date you enter, without you having to remember which side of the DST boundary that date falls on.
When to use it
- Scheduling a call or meeting when you are in the Central time zone and the other party is on the East Coast, so both sides show up at the right moment.
- Checking what time a webinar, live stream, or product launch announced in Eastern Time will actually start for someone working on Central Time.
- Coordinating shipping cutoffs, customer support hours, or store opening times between a Central Time headquarters and an Eastern Time office or warehouse.
- Working out flight departure or arrival times, TV broadcast schedules, or market open/close times that are commonly quoted in Eastern Time.
How to use the CST to EST Converter
- Enter the date for the Central Time you want to convert.
- Enter the clock time as it reads on a Central Time clock (Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and similar).
- Click Convert to Eastern Time, or the tool updates automatically as you edit the fields.
- Read the result: the Eastern Time equivalent, labeled EST or EDT depending on the date, plus the UTC offset for both zones.
Formula & method
Worked examples
A meeting is set for 9:30 AM Central Time on a winter date. What time is that in Eastern Time?
- The date falls outside daylight saving, so Central Time is CST (UTC-6) and Eastern Time is EST (UTC-5).
- Convert to UTC: 9:30 AM CST + 6 hours = 3:30 PM UTC.
- Convert UTC to Eastern: 3:30 PM UTC - 5 hours = 10:30 AM EST.
- Equivalently, just add 1 hour directly: 9:30 AM CST + 1 hour = 10:30 AM EST.
Result: 9:30 AM CST is 10:30 AM EST.
A webinar starts at 1:00 PM Central Time on a summer date, during daylight saving. What time is that in Eastern Time?
- The date falls inside daylight saving for both zones, so Central Time is CDT (UTC-5) and Eastern Time is EDT (UTC-4).
- Convert to UTC: 1:00 PM CDT + 5 hours = 6:00 PM UTC.
- Convert UTC to Eastern: 6:00 PM UTC - 4 hours = 2:00 PM EDT.
- Equivalently, add 1 hour directly: 1:00 PM CDT + 1 hour = 2:00 PM EDT.
Result: 1:00 PM CDT is 2:00 PM EDT.

| Summer (daylight saving) | CDT | UTC-05:00 | EDT | UTC-04:00 |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the gap changes during daylight saving transitions. Because Central and Eastern Time both observe US daylight saving on the same two dates each year (second Sunday in March, first Sunday in November), the 1 hour gap between them never shrinks or grows, even on the transition days themselves. This is different from conversions between a zone that observes DST and one that does not, where the difference can briefly change.
- Mixing up which zone is ahead. Eastern Time is ahead of Central Time, not behind it. If it is 10:00 AM in New York, it is 9:00 AM in Chicago, not 11:00 AM. A simple check: East Coast cities see the sunrise first, so their clocks read later numbers earlier in the day.
- Using CST or EST labels year round. CST and EST only apply during standard time (roughly November to March). For most of the year the correct labels are CDT and EDT. Writing "3 PM CST" in July is technically incorrect, since the zone is on CDT at that time, though the underlying 1 hour gap to Eastern Time stays the same either way.
- Forgetting the date can roll to the next or previous day. Adding 1 hour to a late-evening Central Time can push the result past midnight. For example, 11:30 PM CST becomes 12:30 AM EST the next calendar day. Always check the date shown in the result, not just the clock time.

Frequently asked questions
How many hours ahead is EST of CST?
Eastern Time is always exactly 1 hour ahead of Central Time, year round. This applies whether both zones are on standard time (EST/CST) or both are on daylight time (EDT/CDT), because they switch on the same dates.
Is CST to EST always a 1 hour difference, even during daylight saving?
Yes. Central and Eastern Time both observe US daylight saving time and both switch clocks on the same two dates each year, so the gap between them stays fixed at 1 hour every day of the year, including the transition weekends.
What is 12 PM CST in EST?
12:00 PM (noon) Central Time is 1:00 PM Eastern Time, since Eastern is always 1 hour ahead of Central.
Which US cities are on Central Time and which are on Eastern Time?
Central Time covers cities such as Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Minneapolis, and New Orleans. Eastern Time covers cities such as New York, Washington DC, Atlanta, Boston, and Miami.
Do I add or subtract an hour to convert CST to EST?
Add 1 hour. Central Time to Eastern Time always moves the clock forward by 1 hour; converting the other direction, Eastern to Central, subtracts 1 hour.
Is my date and time sent anywhere when I use this converter?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using the time zone data built into it. Nothing you enter is uploaded, and the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
