📅 Days Until Date Calculator

Pick a date to see how many days until (or since) it.
This days until calculator tells you how many whole days stand between today and any date you choose. Pick a future date to count down to a holiday, deadline, birthday, or trip, or pick a past date to see how many days ago it happened. Along with the day count you get the gap in weeks and the weekday the date lands on, so you can plan around it at a glance.
What is the Days Until Calculator?
Counting days between dates sounds simple, but doing it in your head is error prone because months have different lengths and leap years add a day every four years. The reliable method is to treat each date as a fixed point on the calendar and count the whole days between them. This tool does exactly that: it reduces both today and your chosen date to local midnight, then measures the gap in 24-hour days. Reducing to midnight matters, because it means a date one calendar day away always reads as 1 day, never 0 or 2, regardless of the current time of day.
The result is signed. A future date gives a positive count, shown as the number of days until it arrives. A past date gives a negative count, which this tool presents as a number of days ago so the wording stays natural. If you pick today, the answer is simply zero. The same gap is also expressed in weeks plus any leftover days, which is often easier to picture: 16 days reads more clearly as 2 weeks and 2 days when you are planning a schedule.
Knowing the weekday is the other half of practical planning. The same calendar date falls on a different weekday each year because 365 is not a multiple of 7, so a birthday that was on a Tuesday this year shifts forward by one weekday next year (or two across a leap year). This calculator names the weekday of your target date directly, which is handy for booking time off, scheduling events, or just knowing whether a deadline lands on a weekend.
When to use it
- Counting down the days until a holiday, wedding, exam, or product launch.
- Working out how many days are left before a project deadline or a bill is due.
- Checking how long ago a past event happened, such as a start date or an anniversary.
- Seeing which weekday a future date falls on so you can plan travel or time off.
How to use the Days Until Calculator
- Click the date field and pick your target date (future or past).
- Read the number of days: a positive count means days until, a past date is shown as days ago.
- Check the weeks line to see the same gap as whole weeks plus leftover days.
- Note the weekday the date falls on for scheduling.
- Use the quick buttons to jump to today, 7 days out, or 30 days out.
Formula & method
Worked examples
How many days until Christmas, counting from 19 June 2026.
- Target date: 25 December 2026.
- Count whole days from 19 June 2026 to 25 December 2026 = 189 days.
- 189 ÷ 7 = 27 weeks exactly, with 0 days left over.
- 25 December 2026 falls on a Friday.
Result: 189 days until (27 weeks), a Friday
How many days ago a past date was, counting from 19 June 2026.
- Target date: 12 June 2026 (already passed).
- Count whole days from 19 June 2026 back to 12 June 2026 = 7 days.
- Because the date is in the past, it is shown as 7 days ago.
- 7 ÷ 7 = exactly 1 week.
Result: 7 days ago (1 week), a Friday
Common time spans expressed in days
| Span | Days |
|---|---|
| 1 week | 7 |
| 2 weeks (fortnight) | 14 |
| 30 days | 30 |
| 90 days (about 3 months) | 90 |
| 1 common year | 365 |
| 1 leap year | 366 |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Counting one day off (the fence-post error). People often disagree on whether to count the start day, the end day, or both. This tool counts the whole days between the two dates, so the date one day in the future reads as 1 day, not 0 or 2.
- Ignoring leap years. Spans that cross 29 February include an extra day. Counting in plain months and assuming 365-day years can drift by a day or more over long ranges, which is why a true day count is more accurate.
- Assuming the weekday stays the same each year. A fixed date moves forward one weekday each common year and two across a leap year, because 365 is not divisible by 7. Always check the actual weekday rather than assuming last year's.
Glossary
- Countdown
- The number of days remaining until a future date arrives, decreasing by one each day.
- Leap year
- A year with 366 days, adding 29 February. It occurs in years divisible by 4, except century years not divisible by 400.
- Local midnight
- The 00:00 start of the day in your own time zone. Measuring from midnight to midnight keeps the day count whole and free of time-zone drift.
- Weekday
- The day of the week (Sunday through Saturday) that a given calendar date falls on.
Frequently asked questions
How many days until a date?
Enter the date in the field and the calculator shows the exact number of whole days from today until that date, along with the same gap in weeks and the weekday it lands on.
Can it count days for a date in the past?
Yes. Pick a past date and the result is shown as the number of days ago, so you can see how long ago an event happened as easily as you count down to a future one.
Does the count include today?
No. The tool counts the whole days between today and your target date, so a date tomorrow reads as 1 day and today itself reads as 0 days.
Does it handle leap years correctly?
Yes. It counts real calendar days, so any 29 February inside the range is automatically included and the total stays accurate over long spans.
Why does the weekday change from year to year?
A common year has 365 days, which is 52 weeks plus 1 day, so a fixed date shifts forward one weekday each year, and two across a leap year. The tool shows the correct weekday for the year you choose.
Is my date sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser using your device clock. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or sent to any server.
