Pick a date to see how many days until (or since) it.

This days until countdown calculator tells you how many whole days stand between today and any date you choose. Pick a future date to count down to a holiday, deadline, birthday, wedding, or trip, or pick a past date to see how many days ago it happened. Along with the day count you get the gap in weeks and months, the number of business days, and the weekday the date lands on, so you can plan around it at a glance.

What is the Days Until Calculator?

Counting days between dates sounds simple, but doing it in your head is error prone because months have different lengths (28 to 31 days) and leap years add an extra day every four years. The reliable method is to treat each date as a fixed point on the calendar and count the whole days between them. This tool does exactly that: it reduces both today and your chosen date to local midnight, then measures the gap in 24-hour days. Reducing to midnight matters, because it means a date one calendar day away always reads as 1 day, never 0 or 2, regardless of the time of day when you run the count.

The result is signed. A future date gives a positive count, shown as the number of days until it arrives, which is the classic countdown. A past date gives a negative count, which this tool presents as a number of days ago so the wording stays natural. If you pick today, the answer is simply zero. Expressing the same gap in more than one unit makes it easier to picture: 16 days reads more clearly as 2 weeks and 2 days, and 100 days reads as roughly 3 months and 1 week when you are sketching out a schedule. The calculator shows the exact day count first, then those friendlier breakdowns beside it.

There is an important difference between calendar days and business days. A calendar day count includes every weekend and holiday in the span, which is what you want for a countdown to a personal event. Business days (also called working days or workdays) count only Monday to Friday and skip weekends, which is what deadlines, shipping estimates, invoice terms, and "within 10 business days" promises actually run on. As a rough guide, five calendar weeks contain about 25 business days, and any 7-day stretch loses 2 days to the weekend. For precise legal or contractual deadlines you also need to subtract public holidays, which vary by country and even by state or province, so always confirm the official holiday calendar for your region.

Knowing the weekday is the other half of practical planning. The same calendar date falls on a different weekday each year because 365 is not a multiple of 7. A common year is 52 weeks plus 1 day, so a fixed date shifts forward one weekday each year, and two weekdays when a 29 February sits between the two points. That is why a birthday on a Tuesday this year lands on a Wednesday next year, then jumps to a Friday if a leap day intervenes. This calculator names the weekday of your target date directly, which is handy for booking time off, scheduling events, or simply knowing whether a deadline falls on a weekend when nobody will action it.

Time zones and daylight saving are the two things that quietly break naive day counts elsewhere. Because this tool measures midnight to midnight in your own local time zone, a one-hour clock change in spring or autumn never nudges the total up or down, and a date is counted as the same whole day whether you check it at 6am or 11pm. The only thing that changes the answer is the calendar itself: the further ahead your target date, the larger the countdown, and it ticks down by exactly one each midnight that passes.

When to use it

  • Counting down the days until a holiday, wedding, exam, birthday, or product launch.
  • Working out how many days are left before a project deadline, a bill is due, or a subscription renews.
  • Estimating a delivery or refund window in business days, where weekends do not count.
  • Checking how long ago a past event happened, such as a start date, a purchase, or an anniversary.
  • Seeing which weekday a future date falls on so you can plan travel, appointments, or time off.
  • Tracking a personal streak or milestone, such as days since you quit a habit or began a routine.

How to use the Days Until Calculator

  1. Click the date field and pick your target date (future or past).
  2. Read the headline number of days: a positive count means days until, a past date is shown as days ago.
  3. Check the weeks and months line to see the same gap in friendlier units.
  4. Look at the business days figure when the count is for a deadline or delivery window.
  5. Note the weekday the target date falls on for scheduling.
  6. Use the quick buttons to jump to today, 7 days out, or 30 days out.

Formula & method

days = (target date at midnight − today at midnight) ÷ 86,400,000 ms.   A positive result is days until; a negative result is days ago.   weeks = days ÷ 7 (remainder shown as leftover days).   business days = calendar days minus every Saturday and Sunday in the span.

Worked examples

How many days until Christmas, counting from 8 July 2026.

  1. Target date: 25 December 2026.
  2. Count whole calendar days from 8 July 2026 to 25 December 2026 = 170 days.
  3. 170 divided by 7 = 24 weeks and 2 days.
  4. 25 December 2026 falls on a Friday.

Result: 170 days until (24 weeks and 2 days), a Friday

How many days ago a past date was, counting from 8 July 2026.

  1. Target date: 1 July 2026 (already passed).
  2. Count whole days from 8 July 2026 back to 1 July 2026 = 7 days.
  3. Because the date is in the past, it is shown as 7 days ago.
  4. 7 divided by 7 = exactly 1 week.

Result: 7 days ago (1 week), a Wednesday

Business days until a deadline 3 weeks away.

  1. Target date is 21 calendar days from today.
  2. A 21-day span contains exactly 3 weekends, which is 6 weekend days.
  3. 21 calendar days minus 6 weekend days = 15 business days.
  4. Subtract any public holidays that fall on a weekday inside the span for a contractual figure.

Result: 21 calendar days, about 15 business days before holidays

Leap year366 days (52 weeks + 2 days)Moves forward 2 weekdays

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Counting one day off (the fence-post error). People often disagree on whether to count the start day, the end day, or both. This tool counts the whole days between the two dates, so the date one day in the future reads as 1 day, not 0 or 2. Decide upfront whether your deadline is inclusive of the final day.
  • Mixing up calendar days and business days. A "within 10 days" promise and a "within 10 business days" promise can differ by a full week. Business days skip weekends, so 10 business days is 14 calendar days at minimum, and more if a holiday lands inside the span.
  • Ignoring leap years. Spans that cross 29 February include an extra day. Counting in plain months and assuming every year has 365 days can drift by a day or more over long ranges, which is why a true calendar day count is more accurate.
  • Assuming the weekday stays the same each year. A fixed date moves forward one weekday each common year and two across a leap year, because 365 is not divisible by 7. Always check the actual weekday rather than assuming last year's.
  • Forgetting public holidays in a business-day count. Working days exclude national and regional holidays as well as weekends. A raw weekday count is a good estimate, but confirm the official holiday calendar for your country or state before treating it as a firm contractual deadline.

Glossary

Countdown
The number of days remaining until a future date arrives, decreasing by one each day.
Business day
An official working day, usually Monday to Friday, excluding weekends and public holidays. Deadlines and delivery windows are often quoted in business days.
Calendar day
Any day on the calendar, including weekends and holidays. A plain days-until count uses calendar days.
Leap year
A year with 366 days, adding 29 February. It occurs in years divisible by 4, except century years not divisible by 400.
Local midnight
The 00:00 start of the day in your own time zone. Measuring from midnight to midnight keeps the day count whole and free of time-zone drift.
Fortnight
A span of 14 days, or two weeks. A common unit for pay cycles and scheduling in some regions.
Weekday
The day of the week (Sunday through Saturday) that a given calendar date falls on.
Fence-post error
A common off-by-one mistake from counting the endpoints inconsistently, such as including both the start and end day when only the gap was intended.

Frequently asked questions

How many days until a date?

Enter the date in the field and the calculator shows the exact number of whole days from today until that date, along with the same gap in weeks and months, the business days, and the weekday it lands on.

What is the difference between days and business days?

Calendar days count every day including weekends and holidays, while business days count only Monday to Friday. A 10 business day window is at least 14 calendar days because it skips two weekends, and longer still if a public holiday falls inside it.

Can it count days for a date in the past?

Yes. Pick a past date and the result is shown as the number of days ago, so you can see how long ago an event happened as easily as you count down to a future one.

Does the count include today?

No. The tool counts the whole days between today and your target date, so a date tomorrow reads as 1 day and today itself reads as 0 days. If you need an inclusive figure, add one to the result.

How do I count down to Christmas or another holiday?

Pick the holiday date in the field, for example 25 December, and the tool shows the days remaining, the weeks, and the weekday it falls on. The reference table on this page also lists the days until several popular holidays.

Does it handle leap years correctly?

Yes. It counts real calendar days, so any 29 February inside the range is automatically included and the total stays accurate over long spans.

Does daylight saving time change the result?

No. The calculator measures from local midnight to local midnight, so a one-hour clock change in spring or autumn never adds or removes a day from the count.

Why does the weekday change from year to year?

A common year has 365 days, which is 52 weeks plus 1 day, so a fixed date shifts forward one weekday each year, and two across a leap year. The tool shows the correct weekday for the year you choose.

How many days are there in a year for counting purposes?

A common year has 365 days and a leap year has 366 days. Over long countdowns the tool counts each real calendar day rather than assuming a flat 365, so the total stays exact.

Is my date sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser using your device clock. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or sent to any server.
