Enter 2024 and this leap year calculator confirms it is a leap year of 366 days with a February 29, because 2024 is divisible by 4 and is not a century year. Type any year and the tool gives a clear Yes or No, names the exact part of the rule that decided it, shows the days in February and in the year, and lists the next 5 leap years. A second mode counts how many leap years fall between any two years, inclusive, so there are 25 leap years from 2000 to 2100.

What is the Leap Year Calculator?

A leap year is a year of 366 days instead of 365, with the extra day placed at February 29. The reason we need this leap year calculator at all is that the Earth takes about 365.2422 days to circle the Sun, not a neat 365. That leftover quarter of a day would push the seasons out of step with the calendar if it were ignored, so an extra day is added roughly every four years to keep the dates and the seasons aligned.

The modern Gregorian leap year rule uses three nested tests, and this leap year calculator applies them in order. First, a year must be divisible by 4 to qualify. Second, century years that end in 00 are held back as an exception even though they divide by 4. Third, an exception to that exception lets century years divisible by 400 back in. So 2024 is a leap year, 1900 is divisible by 100 but not 400 so it is not a leap year, and 2000 is divisible by 400 so it is. That is exactly why the calculator does not just check divisibility by 4.

The divisible by 4 rule on its own is the older Julian rule, which added a leap day every fourth year with no century exception. Over centuries the Julian calendar drifted about three days every 400 years because it inserted slightly too many leap days. The Gregorian fix removes three of those leap days per 400 years by skipping most century years, which brings the average calendar year to 365.2425 days, very close to the true solar year. When you use the leap year calculator on years like 1700, 1800, or 2100, you are watching that correction in action.

Beyond a single verdict, the leap year calculator helps with planning and math. The next leap years list tells you when the next February 29 falls, which matters for anniversaries, contracts, and anyone born on the 29th. The range counter answers how many leap years, and therefore how many extra days, sit between two dates, which is useful for payroll periods, interest accrual, and day counting in spreadsheets. Every result is computed in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere.

When to use it

  • Confirming a year has a February 29 before setting an anniversary, contract date, or birthday for someone born on the 29th.
  • Counting how many leap years fall in a date range to get the exact number of days for payroll, interest, or project timelines.
  • Settling whether century years such as 1900, 2000, or 2100 are leap years using the divisible by 400 exception.
  • Teaching or learning the divisible by 4, 100, and 400 rule with a live verdict and the reason spelled out.

How to use the Leap Year Calculator

  1. Type a year into the Year to check box, or tap a quick button for this year, 2000, 2024, 1900, or 2100.
  2. Read the verdict, which states plainly whether the year is a leap year, plus the reason line naming the rule that decided it.
  3. Check the days in February, days in the year, and the next 5 leap years, and use Copy to grab the summary.
  4. For the second mode, enter a From year and a To year to count how many leap years fall between them, inclusive.

Formula & method

A year is a leap year when (year mod 4 = 0 AND year mod 100 is not 0) OR (year mod 400 = 0). A leap year has 366 days with 29 days in February; otherwise the year is a common year of 365 days with 28 days in February. Century years (divisible by 100) are leap years only when they are also divisible by 400.

Worked examples

Is 2024 a leap year?

  1. 2024 divided by 4 leaves no remainder, so it passes the first test.
  2. 2024 does not end in 00, so it is not a century year and the exception does not apply.
  3. With the first test passed and no exception, 2024 is a leap year.

Result: 2024 is a leap year with 366 days and a February 29. The next leap years are 2028, 2032, 2036, 2040, and 2044.

How many leap years are there from 2000 to 2100 inclusive?

  1. Every 4th year in the range is a candidate: 2000, 2004, ... up to 2100, which is 26 candidates.
  2. Remove century years that are not divisible by 400: 2100 is divisible by 100 but not 400, so it drops out.
  3. 2000 is divisible by 400, so it stays. That leaves 26 minus 1 = 25 leap years.

Result: There are 25 leap years between 2000 and 2100 inclusive, which adds 25 extra days to that span.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every fourth year is a leap year. Divisible by 4 alone is the old Julian rule. Under the Gregorian calendar we use today, century years like 1900 and 2100 are skipped unless they also divide by 400, which is why a full leap year calculator checks all three tests.
  • Thinking all century years are skipped. Century years are usually not leap years, but the ones divisible by 400 are. That is why 2000 was a leap year even though 1900 and 2100 are not.
  • Getting the range count off by one. When counting leap years between two years, decide whether both endpoints are included. This calculator counts inclusively, so 2000 to 2100 gives 25, not 24 or 26.
  • Confusing leap years with leap seconds. A leap second is a one-off second added to clocks to track tiny changes in Earth rotation. It is unrelated to leap years, which add a whole calendar day at February 29.

Glossary

Leap year
A year of 366 days that includes an extra day, February 29, to keep the calendar aligned with the Earth orbit around the Sun.
Common year
An ordinary year of 365 days with 28 days in February and no February 29.
Century year
A year ending in 00, such as 1900 or 2000. These are leap years only when divisible by 400.
Gregorian calendar
The calendar in common use worldwide today, introduced in 1582, which sets the modern divisible by 4, 100, and 400 leap year rule.
Julian calendar
An earlier calendar that made every fourth year a leap year, which added slightly too many leap days over the centuries.
Modulo
The remainder after division. Year mod 4 = 0 means the year divides evenly by 4, the first test in the leap year rule.

Frequently asked questions

Is 2024 a leap year?

Yes, 2024 is a leap year with 366 days and a February 29, because it is divisible by 4 and is not a century year. Enter it in the leap year calculator to see the full breakdown and the next leap years.

What is the leap year rule?

A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except century years ending in 00, which must also be divisible by 400. So 2024 and 2000 are leap years, while 1900 and 2100 are not.

Why is 2000 a leap year but 1900 is not?

2000 is divisible by 400, which overrides the century exception and makes it a leap year, while 1900 is divisible by 100 but not 400, so it stays a common year. Both divide by 4, so the 400 test is what separates them.

How many days are in a leap year?

A leap year has 366 days, one more than the 365 days in a common year. The extra day is February 29, so February has 29 days instead of 28.

When is the next leap year?

Counting from 2026, the next leap years are 2028, 2032, 2036, 2040, and 2044. The leap year calculator lists the next 5 leap years at or after whatever year you enter.

How many leap years are there between two years?

Use the range mode to count them inclusively. For example, there are 25 leap years between 2000 and 2100, and 24 leap years in a typical 100 year span that does not include an extra divisible by 400 century year.
