What is the Leap Year Calculator?

A leap year is a year of 366 days instead of 365, with the extra day placed at February 29. The reason we need this leap year calculator at all is that the Earth takes about 365.2422 days to circle the Sun, not a neat 365. That leftover quarter of a day would push the seasons out of step with the calendar if it were ignored, so an extra day is added roughly every four years to keep the dates and the seasons aligned.

The modern Gregorian leap year rule uses three nested tests, and this leap year calculator applies them in order. First, a year must be divisible by 4 to qualify. Second, century years that end in 00 are held back as an exception even though they divide by 4. Third, an exception to that exception lets century years divisible by 400 back in. So 2024 is a leap year, 1900 is divisible by 100 but not 400 so it is not a leap year, and 2000 is divisible by 400 so it is. That is exactly why the calculator does not just check divisibility by 4.

The divisible by 4 rule on its own is the older Julian rule, which added a leap day every fourth year with no century exception. Over centuries the Julian calendar drifted about three days every 400 years because it inserted slightly too many leap days. The Gregorian fix removes three of those leap days per 400 years by skipping most century years, which brings the average calendar year to 365.2425 days, very close to the true solar year. Common mistakes to avoid

• Assuming every fourth year is a leap year. Divisible by 4 alone is the old Julian rule. Under the Gregorian calendar we use today, century years like 1900 and 2100 are skipped unless they also divide by 400, which is why a full leap year calculator checks all three tests.
• Thinking all century years are skipped. Century years are usually not leap years, but the ones divisible by 400 are. That is why 2000 was a leap year even though 1900 and 2100 are not.
• Getting the range count off by one. When counting leap years between two years, decide whether both endpoints are included. This calculator counts inclusively, so 2000 to 2100 gives 25, not 24 or 26.
• Confusing leap years with leap seconds. A leap second is a one-off second added to clocks to track tiny changes in Earth rotation. It is unrelated to leap years, which add a whole calendar day at February 29.
