Pick a date to see it written in Roman numerals.

This Roman numeral date converter turns any calendar date into Roman numerals. Pick a date and it splits the day, month and year into their Roman forms, then assembles several popular layouts such as 19.VI.MMXXVI. It is the format people choose for tattoos, wedding rings, anniversary jewellery and engravings, so each version is laid out clearly with a copy button next to it.

What is the Roman Numeral Date Converter?

Roman numerals are a number system from ancient Rome that builds values from seven letters: I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500) and M (1000). Larger numbers are written by placing symbols side by side and adding them, so XV is 15 and CXX is 120. To avoid four of the same letter in a row, the system uses subtractive notation, where a smaller symbol placed before a larger one is subtracted: IV is 4 (one less than five), IX is 9, XL is 40 and CM is 900. A date is just three numbers, the day, the month and the year, so converting it means converting each part on its own and joining them with a separator.

There is no single official Roman numeral date format, which is why this tool offers several. The most common for tattoos is day, then month, then year separated by dots, for example 7.XI.MMXXIV for 7 November 2024. Americans often prefer month first (XI.VII.MMXXIV), and some engravers use dashes, slashes or a raised middle dot for a more classical look. The order matters: 7.XI and XI.VII are the same three numbers in a different sequence, so always confirm which part is which before committing to permanent ink or metal.

The year is usually the part that surprises people. A modern year like 2026 becomes MMXXVI: two thousands (MM), two tens (XX), a five (V) and a one (I). Years from the 1900s often look long because of the subtractive 900: 1999 is MCMXCIX. Classic Roman numerals have no symbol for zero and, in their everyday written form, run from 1 to 3999, which covers every realistic date, so this tool keeps to that range and writes each number using the standard subtractive rules.

When to use it

  • Designing a tattoo of a birthday, wedding date or memorial date in Roman numerals.
  • Engraving an anniversary or important date on a ring, watch or piece of jewellery.
  • Adding a tasteful date to invitations, certificates, plaques or the credits of a film or book.
  • Double-checking a Roman numeral date you have seen so you can read or verify it correctly.

How to use the Roman Numeral Date Converter

  1. Pick the date you want to convert using the date picker.
  2. Choose the part order: day-month-year, month-day-year, or year-month-day.
  3. Read the day, month and year shown individually in Roman numerals.
  4. Copy the full format you want (dots, slashes, dashes or spaces) with its copy button.

Formula & method

Convert each part separately. Build a number by adding symbols from largest to smallest (M=1000, D=500, C=100, L=50, X=10, V=5, I=1), using subtractive pairs IV=4, IX=9, XL=40, XC=90, CD=400, CM=900. Then join day, month and year with a separator.

Worked examples

Convert 19 June 2026 to Roman numerals in day-month-year order.

  1. Day 19: X (10) + IX (9) = XIX
  2. Month 6 (June): VI = 5 + 1 = VI
  3. Year 2026: MM (2000) + XX (20) + VI (6) = MMXXVI
  4. Join with dots in day-month-year order

Result: 19.VI.MMXXVI (also written XIX.VI.MMXXVI if the day is spelled out)

Convert 25 December 1999 to Roman numerals in day-month-year order.

  1. Day 25: XX (20) + V (5) = XXV
  2. Month 12 (December): X (10) + II (2) = XII
  3. Year 1999: M (1000) + CM (900) + XC (90) + IX (9) = MCMXCIX
  4. Join with dots in day-month-year order

Result: XXV.XII.MCMXCIX

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing up the part order. Day-month-year and month-day-year use the same three numbers in a different sequence, so 7.XI and XI.VII can both look right. Decide which order you mean before engraving or tattooing, because the parts are not always obvious to a reader.
  • Writing four identical letters in a row. Roman numerals avoid IIII or XXXX. The number 4 is IV, 9 is IX, 40 is XL and 90 is XC. The one common exception is on some clock faces, which use IIII for four, but that is a decorative tradition, not the standard rule.
  • Expecting a symbol for zero. There is no Roman numeral for zero, so a date like 2 March is II, not 02. Drop any leading zeros when you write the day or month in Roman numerals.
  • Treating the result as a single number. A Roman numeral date is three separate numbers joined by separators, not one giant numeral. Run the day, month and year through the converter individually rather than the date as a whole.

Glossary

Roman numeral
A number written with the letters I, V, X, L, C, D and M, the system used in ancient Rome.
Subtractive notation
Writing a smaller symbol before a larger one to subtract it, as in IV for 4 and CM for 900, to avoid four repeats.
Additive notation
Adding symbols placed from largest to smallest, as in XVII for 17, which is the default way numerals combine.
Separator
The character placed between the day, month and year, such as a dot, slash, dash, space or raised middle dot.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a date in Roman numerals?

Convert the day, month and year to Roman numerals separately, then join them with a separator. For example 19 June 2026 becomes 19 = XIX, 6 = VI and 2026 = MMXXVI, written as XIX.VI.MMXXVI or 19.VI.MMXXVI depending on whether you spell the day out.

What is the best Roman numeral date format for a tattoo?

The most popular tattoo format is day, then month, then year separated by dots, such as 7.XI.MMXXIV. Some people prefer dashes or a raised middle dot for a more classical look. This tool shows all of these so you can pick the one you like best.

How is the year 2026 in Roman numerals?

2026 is MMXXVI. It breaks down as MM for 2000, XX for 20 and VI for 6, written together with no separators inside the year itself.

Why does 1999 look so long in Roman numerals?

1999 is MCMXCIX, which is M (1000) plus CM (900) plus XC (90) plus IX (9). The subtractive pairs CM, XC and IX keep it from repeating letters, but it still comes out as a long string compared with rounder years.

Is there a Roman numeral for zero?

No. The classic Roman system has no symbol for zero, so you drop leading zeros. The 2nd of a month is II, not 02, and a month like March (the 3rd month) is III.

Can Roman numerals show any year?

Standard everyday Roman numerals run from 1 to 3999, which covers every realistic calendar date. Larger numbers need special bar notation, so this converter keeps to the classic 1 to 3999 range for clarity.
