A mixed number is a whole number sitting next to a proper fraction, like 2 3/4. This calculator converts a mixed number into an improper fraction and a decimal, and it works the other way too: feed it an improper fraction such as 11/4 and it returns the mixed number in lowest terms. Switch modes with one tap, enter your values, and the answer updates as you type.

What is the Mixed Number Calculator?

A mixed number combines a whole part and a fractional part, for example 2 3/4 means two whole units plus three quarters. An improper fraction writes the same value as a single fraction whose numerator is larger than (or equal to) its denominator, so 2 3/4 becomes 11/4. The two forms are exactly equal, they are just different ways of writing the same quantity, and you convert between them depending on what you are doing: mixed numbers read more naturally, while improper fractions are easier to add, multiply and divide.

To turn a mixed number into an improper fraction you keep the denominator, multiply the whole number by that denominator, and add the numerator. For 2 3/4 that is 2 x 4 + 3 = 11, written over 4 to give 11/4. Going the other way, you divide the numerator by the denominator: the quotient is the whole number and the remainder becomes the new numerator over the same denominator. So 11 divided by 4 is 2 remainder 3, which is 2 3/4.

The last step is usually to simplify. A fraction is in lowest terms when the numerator and denominator share no common factor other than 1. You find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the two numbers and divide both by it. For example 18/8 has a GCD of 2, so it reduces to 9/4, which is the mixed number 2 1/4. This calculator simplifies automatically, so the mixed number and the improper fraction it shows are always in their simplest form.

When to use it

  • Converting a measurement like 5 1/2 inches into an improper fraction before multiplying or dividing it in a recipe or woodworking cut.
  • Helping a student check homework that asks them to rewrite mixed numbers as improper fractions and back again.
  • Turning an awkward improper fraction from a calculation, such as 23/6, into the tidy mixed number 3 5/6 for a final answer.
  • Getting the decimal value of a mixed number quickly, for instance to compare 7/8 against 0.9.

How to use the Mixed Number Calculator

  1. Choose a direction: "Mixed to improper" or "Improper to mixed".
  2. For a mixed number, enter the whole number, the numerator, and the denominator (for example 2, 3 and 4 for 2 3/4).
  3. For an improper fraction, enter just the numerator and denominator (for example 11 and 4).
  4. Read off the improper fraction, the mixed number in lowest terms, and the decimal, all updated as you type.

Formula & method

Mixed to improper: improper numerator = (whole x denominator) + numerator, kept over the same denominator. Improper to mixed: whole = floor(numerator ÷ denominator), new numerator = numerator − (whole x denominator), over the same denominator. Simplify by dividing numerator and denominator by their GCD.

Worked examples

Convert the mixed number 2 3/4 to an improper fraction and a decimal.

  1. Multiply the whole number by the denominator: 2 x 4 = 8
  2. Add the numerator: 8 + 3 = 11
  3. Write the result over the original denominator: 11/4
  4. Check the GCD of 11 and 4 is 1, so 11/4 is already in lowest terms
  5. Divide for the decimal: 11 ÷ 4 = 2.75

Result: 2 3/4 = 11/4 = 2.75

Convert the improper fraction 23/6 back to a mixed number.

  1. Divide the numerator by the denominator: 23 ÷ 6 = 3 remainder 5
  2. The quotient 3 is the whole number
  3. The remainder 5 becomes the new numerator over 6: 5/6
  4. GCD of 5 and 6 is 1, so 5/6 is already in lowest terms
  5. Combine the parts: 3 5/6

Result: 23/6 = 3 5/6 ≈ 3.8333

Simplify and convert the improper fraction 18/8 to a mixed number.

  1. Find the GCD of 18 and 8, which is 2
  2. Divide both by 2 to simplify: 18/8 = 9/4
  3. Divide for the whole part: 9 ÷ 4 = 2 remainder 1
  4. The remainder 1 over 4 gives 1/4
  5. Combine the parts: 2 1/4

Result: 18/8 = 9/4 = 2 1/4 = 2.25

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Adding instead of multiplying the whole number. To convert 2 3/4 you multiply 2 by the denominator 4 and then add the numerator, giving 11. Simply adding 2 + 3 = 5 over 4 is wrong, it gives a completely different value.
  • Changing the denominator. The denominator stays the same throughout the conversion. Only the numerator is recalculated. If 2 3/4 turns into anything other than something over 4, a step has gone astray.
  • Forgetting to simplify the result. An answer like 9/6 or 2 4/8 is not finished. Divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor so the fraction is in lowest terms, here 3/2 and 2 1/2.
  • Mishandling the negative sign. A negative mixed number such as -1 1/3 means the whole value is negative, equal to -4/3, not -1 plus a positive 1/3. Apply the minus sign to the entire quantity, not just the whole part.

Glossary

Mixed number

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert a mixed number to an improper fraction?

Multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator, and place the result over the same denominator. For 2 3/4 that is 2 x 4 + 3 = 11, so the improper fraction is 11/4. The calculator does this instantly when you type the three parts.

How do you convert an improper fraction to a mixed number?

Divide the numerator by the denominator. The whole-number quotient is the whole part, and the remainder becomes the new numerator over the same denominator. For 11/4, 11 divided by 4 is 2 remainder 3, giving 2 3/4.

What is the difference between a proper and an improper fraction?

A proper fraction has a numerator smaller than its denominator, so its value is less than 1 (for example 3/4). An improper fraction has a numerator greater than or equal to its denominator, so its value is 1 or more (for example 11/4).

Does this calculator simplify the result?

Yes. It divides the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor, so both the improper fraction and the mixed number are always shown in lowest terms. For example 18/8 is reduced to 9/4, or 2 1/4.

Can it handle negative mixed numbers?

Yes. Enter a negative whole number, such as -1 with a fraction of 1/3, and the calculator treats the whole quantity as negative, returning -4/3 and a decimal of about -1.3333.

How do I turn a mixed number into a decimal?

Convert it to an improper fraction, then divide the numerator by the denominator. For 2 3/4 that is 11 divided by 4, which equals 2.75. The calculator shows the decimal alongside the fraction forms automatically.
