Enter a decimal to convert it to a percentage.
Rule: to go from percent to decimal, divide by 100 (move the decimal point two places left). To go the other way, multiply by 100 (move it two places right).
This converter turns a percent into a decimal and a decimal back into a percent. Type in either field and the other updates instantly, so you can move between the two forms without any mental arithmetic. The whole trick is a single step: a percent is just a number out of 100, so dividing by 100 gives the decimal and multiplying by 100 gives the percent.
What is the Percent to Decimal Converter?
The word percent literally means "per hundred", so 25% is shorthand for 25 out of 100, which is the fraction 25/100. When you carry out that division you get 0.25, and that is exactly the decimal form. This is why converting a percent to a decimal is always the same move: divide the percent number by 100. Going the other way, you multiply the decimal by 100 to recover the percent.
There is an even faster way to do it by hand: move the decimal point. To turn a percent into a decimal, slide the decimal point two places to the left, so 7% becomes 0.07 and 150% becomes 1.5. To turn a decimal into a percent, slide the point two places to the right, so 0.4 becomes 40% and 1.25 becomes 125%. Moving two places is the same as dividing or multiplying by 100, since 100 has two zeros.
Decimals are the form most calculators, spreadsheets and formulas actually want. If you need 8% of a number, you multiply by 0.08, not by 8. Interest rates, tax rates, discounts and probabilities are all quoted as percents for readability but used as decimals in the maths. Knowing how to flip between the two quickly is one of the most useful small skills in everyday number work.
When to use it
- Converting an interest rate, tax rate or discount from a percent into the decimal a spreadsheet formula needs.
- Turning a probability written as a percent (such as 30%) into the decimal 0.30 for a calculation.
- Reading a decimal result back as a familiar percent, for example showing 0.085 as 8.5%.
- Checking homework where a question gives a percent but the method expects a decimal multiplier.
How to use the Percent to Decimal Converter
- Type a percentage into the Percent field, for example 25.
- Read the decimal result instantly in the Decimal field and the result panel.
- Or type a decimal into the Decimal field to convert it back to a percent.
- Clear a field to reset, both forms update live as you type.
Formula & method
Worked examples
Convert 25% to a decimal.
- Start with the percent value: 25
- Divide by 100: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
- Or move the decimal point two places left: 25. becomes 0.25
Result: 25% = 0.25
Convert the decimal 0.4 to a percent.
- Start with the decimal value: 0.4
- Multiply by 100: 0.4 x 100 = 40
- Or move the decimal point two places right: 0.40 becomes 40.
Result: 0.4 = 40%
Convert 150% to a decimal.
- Start with the percent value: 150
- Divide by 100: 150 ÷ 100 = 1.5
- A percent above 100 gives a decimal above 1
Result: 150% = 1.5

| 25% | 0.25 |
| 50% | 0.5 |
| 75% | 0.75 |
| 100% | 1 |
| 150% | 1.5 |
| 0.5% | 0.005 |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Forgetting to convert before multiplying. To find 8% of a number you multiply by 0.08, not by 8. Using the raw percent number makes the answer 100 times too big. Always convert to a decimal first.
- Moving the decimal point the wrong way. Percent to decimal moves the point two places left (smaller number), decimal to percent moves it two places right (larger number). Mixing these up turns 5% into 500% or 0.05.
- Dropping a leading zero. A percent below 10 needs a placeholder zero. 7% is 0.07, not 0.7. Forgetting the extra zero makes the value ten times too large.
- Assuming a decimal cannot exceed 1. Percentages above 100% are valid and give decimals above 1. For example 250% is 2.5, which is common with growth figures and markups.
Glossary
- Percent
- A number expressed as a part of 100. The symbol % means "per hundred", so 40% equals 40/100.
- Decimal
- A number written with a decimal point, such as 0.25 or 1.5, that represents the same value as a percent in fractional form.
- Decimal point
- The dot that separates the whole-number part from the fractional part. Shifting it left or right scales the number by powers of 10.
- Multiplier
- The decimal form of a percent used in a calculation, for example 0.08 as the multiplier for 8%.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a percent to a decimal?
Divide the percent by 100, or move the decimal point two places to the left. For example, 25% becomes 0.25 and 7% becomes 0.07. This converter does it for you the moment you type.
How do I convert a decimal to a percent?
Multiply the decimal by 100, or move the decimal point two places to the right, then add a percent sign. For example, 0.4 becomes 40% and 1.25 becomes 125%.
Why does dividing by 100 work?
The word percent means "per hundred", so a percent is already a fraction with 100 on the bottom. Dividing the percent number by 100 simply carries out that fraction and gives the decimal value.
What is 100% as a decimal?
100% as a decimal is exactly 1, because 100 divided by 100 equals 1. By the same logic 200% is 2 and 50% is 0.5.
How do I write a small percent like 0.5% as a decimal?
Divide by 100 as usual: 0.5 ÷ 100 = 0.005. Moving the decimal point two places left from 0.5 also gives 0.005, with extra zeros added as placeholders.
Can a percent be more than 100?
Yes. Percentages above 100% are common for growth, markups and ratios. They convert to decimals greater than 1, so 150% is 1.5 and 250% is 2.5.
