How to Calculate Your Grade: Simple, Weighted, and Final Exam Formulas

A simple grade percentage is points earned divided by points possible, multiplied by 100. That one formula turns any raw score into a percentage you can compare against a letter scale, and it works whether the assignment is out of 10 points or 200.

Say you scored 43 out of a possible 50 points on a quiz. Divide 43 by 50 to get 0.86, then multiply by 100 to get 86 percent. On the standard scale that is a solid B.   1. Find your points earned (for example, 43).
  2. Find the total points possible (for example, 50).
  3. Divide points earned by points possible: 43 / 50 = 0.86.
  4. Multiply by 100 to get the percentage: 0.86 x 100 = 86 percent.

The same approach scales to a whole assignment category. If you have five homework scores, add up all the points you earned across them and divide by all the points those five assignments were worth. Averaging the raw points once is more accurate than averaging five separate percentages, because it correctly accounts for assignments that were worth different amounts.

What is the standard US letter grade scale?

The most common US letter grade scale is A for 90 to 100, B for 80 to 89, C for 70 to 79, D for 60 to 69, and F for anything below 60. Each letter also maps to a grade point value used for GPA, where A is 4.0 down to F at 0.0.

How do you calculate a weighted grade?

A weighted grade is the sum of each category percentage multiplied by that category's weight, where all the weights add up to 100 percent (or 1). Weighting matters because a 20 percent final often counts far more toward your grade than a single homework assignment does.

Suppose your class weights are homework 20 percent, quizzes 30 percent, and the final exam 50 percent, and your averages are 95 in homework, 88 in quizzes, and 80 on the final. Convert each weight to a decimal and multiply:

  1. Homework: 95 x 0.20 = 19.0
  2. Quizzes: 88 x 0.30 = 26.4
  3. Final exam: 80 x 0.50 = 40.0
  4. Add the results: 19.0 + 26.4 + 40.0 = 85.4 percent, a B.

The key check is that your weights sum to 1 (0.20 + 0.30 + 0.50 = 1.00). If they do not, your result will be off. What is the difference between points-based and weighted grading?

In points-based grading, your grade is total points earned divided by total points possible across the whole course, so a big project counts more simply because it is worth more points. In weighted grading, categories are assigned fixed percentages, so a category keeps its share of the grade no matter how many assignments it contains.

The practical difference is where the leverage sits. Under a points system, doing well on the 300 point final matters far more than acing a 10 point warm up, and the math is one big fraction. Under a weighted system, the final counts exactly its assigned percentage even if it is only one exam. Before you predict a grade, read the syllabus to learn which system your course uses, because the same set of scores can produce different final grades under each one.

What grade do you need on the final exam?

To find the score you need on a final, use needed = (target - current x (1 - w)) / w, where w is the final exam weight as a decimal. This tells you the exact percentage the final must reach for you to hit your target grade.

Imagine your target is 90, your current grade going in is 88, and the final is worth 25 percent (w = 0.25). Then needed = (90 - 88 x (1 - 0.25)) / 0.25 = (90 - 88 x 0.75) / 0.25 = (90 - 66) / 0.25 = 24 / 0.25 = 96 percent. So you would need a 96 on the final to finish with a 90.

How do you calculate a test score from wrong answers?

A test score is (total questions minus wrong answers) divided by total questions, times 100. So with n wrong out of T questions the score is (T - n) / T x 100.

If you got 6 questions wrong on a 40 question test, that is (40 - 6) / 40 x 100 = 34 / 40 x 100 = 85 percent, a B. This is the fastest way to grade a quiz when you only counted the mistakes rather than the correct answers. If some questions carry more points than others, this shortcut no longer works, and you should add up earned points instead and divide by the total points on the test.

How do you calculate your GPA?

Your GPA is the credit-weighted average of your grade points. Convert each course letter to points (A is 4.0, B is 3.0, and so on), multiply each course's points by its credit hours, add those products, and divide by the total credit hours you took.

Suppose one semester you take English (3 credits, grade B), Math (4 credits, grade A), and History (3 credits, grade C). Convert each letter to points and weight by credits:

  1. English: 3.0 points x 3 credits = 9.0
  2. Math: 4.0 points x 4 credits = 16.0
  3. History: 2.0 points x 3 credits = 6.0
  4. Add the grade points: 9.0 + 16.0 + 6.0 = 31.0
  5. Add the credit hours: 3 + 4 + 3 = 10
  6. Divide: 31.0 / 10 = 3.1 GPA

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Weights that do not add to 100 percent. Before you compute a weighted grade, confirm the category weights sum to 1. Missing or extra weight quietly distorts the result.
  • Mixing points and percentages. Convert every category to a percentage first, then apply weights. Adding raw points to percentages gives a meaningless number.
  • Averaging percentages instead of points. If assignments are worth different amounts, add the points earned and points possible rather than averaging the individual percentages, or the small assignments will count as much as the big ones.
  • Forgetting extra credit or dropped scores. Some syllabi drop your lowest quiz or add bonus points. Apply those rules before averaging.
  • Assuming the scale. A 90 is an A on the standard scale, but some courses set the A cutoff at 93 or use a curve. Check the syllabus before trusting a letter.
  • Rounding too early. Keep decimals until the final step. Rounding 85.4 to 85 midway can push a borderline grade the wrong way.
