Pick a birth date to find your Western zodiac (star) sign.

Your zodiac sign (also called your star sign or sun sign) is decided by where the Sun sat against the twelve signs of the zodiac on the day you were born. Enter your birth date and this calculator instantly tells you your Western sign, its symbol, its element, the planet that rules it, and the exact date range it covers. It is a light, fun tool: no birth time, no birthplace and no personal details are needed, just the calendar date.

What is the Zodiac Sign Calculator?

The Western (tropical) zodiac splits the year into twelve signs, each tied to a roughly month-long band of dates. The system traces back to Babylonian and Greek astronomy, where the band of sky the Sun appears to travel through over a year was divided into twelve equal parts named after constellations: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Your sun sign is simply whichever of those twelve bands the Sun was passing through on your birthday.

The twelve signs are grouped into four elements, three signs each. Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are cast as bold and energetic, Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) as grounded and practical, Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) as social and ideas-driven, and Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) as emotional and intuitive. Each sign also has a traditional ruling planet, such as Mars for Aries or Venus for Taurus, which astrologers use to colour its supposed character.

This tool uses the common, widely published date ranges for each sign. In reality the Sun crosses from one sign into the next on what astrologers call a cusp, and the exact crossing can shift by a day from year to year because of how the calendar and the Earth's orbit line up. If your birthday lands right on the edge of two signs, treat the result here as the usual answer and check a precise ephemeris for your birth year if you want certainty. Your sun sign does not depend on the year, time or place of birth, only the month and day, which is why this calculator needs nothing more.

When to use it

  • Quickly checking your own star sign or a friend's without flipping through a horoscope page.
  • Settling a debate about which sign a given birthday falls under, especially near a cusp.
  • Filling in a profile, dating app or quiz that asks for your zodiac sign.
  • Teaching kids or students the names, symbols and elements of the twelve signs in a fun way.

How to use the Zodiac Sign Calculator

  1. Click the birth date field and pick your date of birth (or use the Use today button).
  2. Read your zodiac sign, its glyph symbol and its element in the result cards.
  3. Check the date range to confirm where your birthday falls within the sign.
  4. See the summary note for the ruling planet, or clear the field to try another date.

Formula & method

Sun sign is found from the calendar month and day only. The year, time and place of birth are ignored. Each sign owns a fixed date band, for example Aries = March 21 to April 19, and the date is matched to the band it falls inside. Capricorn wraps the year boundary (December 22 to January 19).

Worked examples

A birthday of April 5.

  1. Take the month and day only: month = 4 (April), day = 5.
  2. Aries runs March 21 to April 19, so April 5 sits inside that band.
  3. The next sign, Taurus, does not start until April 20, so it is ruled out.
  4. Aries is a Fire sign ruled by Mars.

Result: Sign: Aries (♈), Element: Fire, Date range: March 21 - April 19.

A birthday of January 8 (a date that wraps the new year).

  1. Take the month and day only: month = 1 (January), day = 8.
  2. Capricorn runs December 22 to January 19, crossing into the new year.
  3. January 8 is on or before January 19, so it still belongs to Capricorn.
  4. Aquarius does not begin until January 20, so it is ruled out.

Result: Sign: Capricorn (♑), Element: Earth, Date range: December 22 - January 19.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the cusp dates never change. The Sun crosses between signs on a slightly different day in some years. If your birthday is right on the boundary of two signs, the standard ranges used here may differ by a day from a precise calculation for your birth year.
  • Confusing the sun sign with the rising or moon sign. This tool gives your sun sign, set only by the calendar date. Your rising (ascendant) and moon signs need your exact birth time and place, so they are a separate calculation.
  • Mixing up Western and Chinese zodiac. The Chinese zodiac assigns an animal to each whole year (Rat, Ox, Tiger and so on). The Western zodiac here is based on the month and day instead, so the two systems give completely different answers.
  • Expecting the sign to depend on birth year. Your sun sign is the same whether you were born in 1990 or 2010 on the same calendar date. Only the month and day matter, so the year is not needed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my zodiac sign?

Enter your date of birth and the calculator matches the month and day to the date range of one of the twelve Western signs. It then shows the sign name, its symbol, its element, the ruling planet and the dates the sign covers.

Do I need my birth time or place?

No. Your sun sign (the everyday star sign) depends only on the month and day of birth. Birth time and place are only needed for your rising sign and moon sign, which this tool does not calculate.

What happens if my birthday is on a cusp?

A cusp is the boundary between two signs. This tool uses the common published date ranges, so it gives the usual answer. Because the Sun crosses on a slightly different day each year, a birthday on the edge may differ by a day from a precise chart for your birth year.

What are the zodiac elements?

The twelve signs are split into four elements with three signs each: Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) and Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces).

Is the Western zodiac the same as the Chinese zodiac?

No. The Western zodiac uses your month and day to assign one of twelve signs. The Chinese zodiac assigns an animal based on your birth year, so the two systems give different results from the same birthday.

Does my zodiac sign change with the year I was born?

No. The same calendar date always gives the same sun sign regardless of the year. That is why the calculator only needs the month and day, not the full birth year.
