- Reduce the year: 1990 gives 1+9+9+0 = 19, then 1+9 = 10, then 1+0 = 1.

- Reduce the day: 15 gives 1+5 = 6.
- Add the three parts: 1 + 5 + 6 = 12, then reduce 12 to 1+2 = 3.

Expression and Soul Urge for the name John Smith.
- Convert each letter: J=1, O=6, H=8, N=5, S=1, M=4, I=9, T=2, H=8.
- Sum all letters: 1+6+8+5+1+4+9+2+8 = 44, then reduce 44 to 4+4 = 8.
- Now take only the vowels O and I: 6 + 9 = 15.
- Reduce 15 to 1+5 = 6 for the Soul Urge.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Reducing the whole date in one pass. For the Life Path, reduce the year, month and day separately and only add them at the end. Adding every digit of the date together in a single pass can land on a different number and can also hide a master number that should have been kept.
- Losing the master numbers. When a running total or a part equals 11, 22 or 33, stop reducing. These master numbers are kept on purpose. Reducing 11 to 2 or 22 to 4 by reflex is one of the most common errors.
- Mixing up Expression and Soul Urge. The Expression number uses every letter of the name, while the Soul Urge uses only the vowels A, E, I, O and U. Counting consonants for the Soul Urge, or only vowels for the Expression, gives the wrong figures.
- Using a nickname instead of the intended name. Traditional numerology uses the full birth name for the Expression and Soul Urge. A nickname or married name produces valid numbers too, but they answer a different question, so decide which name you mean before reading the result.
